February 2024

Posted: March 2024

Have you been feeling the love? There's imagery everywhere you go around the months of February and March, evoking thoughts of romantic love expressed on Valentine’s Day and maternal love we celebrate on Mother’s Day, and this has inspired my jewellery making with symbolic hearts and flowers to represent these emotional bonds of our most cherished relationships.

Hot off my Workbench

Making Jewellery

I love my workbench days, working on my jewellery creations. Every piece of jewellery I make goes through lots of processes. I thought you might like a little glimpse behind the scenes of my work in progress. Here's how I make a simple silver ring:

Sawing

In this picture I'm cutting a piece of oval silver wire by sawing with a jeweller's piercing saw.

Filing

I use little needle files to smooth the sawn ends to get them perfectly flat and clean to ensure I will get a good solder join.

Soldering

Next I form the ring by bending the wire to align the ends and then solder the join using my blow torch.

Shaping

Once it is soldered I hammer the ring on a mandrel until the ring is perfectly round, using a rawhide hammer so it does not mark the silver.

Next I have to clean up the ring to remove fire scale caused by the blow torch, sanding with various grades of sandpaper to remove scratches and finally lots of polishing. It's a laborious process, but worth all the effort to bring you unique handmade jewellery pieces that you can't get anywhere else.
